Ambassador Mohamed Hassan Kaisamba Handover Qurans Donated by a Turkish National to the Director General and Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone’s First Ambassador to Turkey, Mohamed Hassan Kaisamba has handed over about 800 copies of the Holy Quran to the Director General and Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Florence Nyawa Bangalie during a brief ceremony held on the 5th Floor of the Ministry at Tower Hill, Freetown. The Qurans have been donated to the Muslim Community of Sierra Leone by Suat Gurcan, a Turkish national.

The Head of Chancery of the Sierra Leone Embassy in Turkey, Mohamed Lamin Khan said they had received a total of 1,500 copies of the Holy Quran from a Turkish friend of the Sierra Leone Embassy in Ankara, Suat Gurcan, who had made the donation to the Government for nationwide distribution to Mosques in Sierra Leone.

Mr. Khan informed that the Embassy has at this time been able to transport to Freetown about 800 copies of the Quran and promised that the remaining 700 copies will be transported in due course. The Head of Chancery said the Embassy expedited the transportation process of the 800 copies to meet the Donor, Mr. Gurcan’s desire for the Qurans to be distributed during the Holy month of Ramadan.

In his brief statement, the Sierra Leone Ambassador to Turkey, Mr. Mohamed Hassan Kaisamba said as an Embassy, they have established stronger ties with friends and potential investors in Turkey to help fulfill His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s manifesto promises to the people of Sierra Leone to boost the economic development of the country.

Ambassador Kaisamba said the donation is a Goodwill gesture coming in at the right time as Sierra Leonean Muslims have joined the global Muslim community to observe the Holy Month of Ramadan. He stated that the presence of the Office of the Vice President and the Ministry of Social Welfare was no mistake as the two offices are responsible for Muslim and religious affairs in the country.

Ambassador Mohamed Hassan Kaisamba shared that, the Embassy had come to know Mr. Suat Gurcan through a former student of one of the Universities of Turkey, Mr. Ibrahim M. Sow and that through Mr. Sow’s contacts, the Embassy has been able to meet with influential people in Turkey who have potential to contribute immensely to development in Sierra Leone.

He called on the Office of the Vice President and the Ministry of Social Welfare to ensure fair distribution of the Holy Books nationwide adding that the beneficiaries of the donated Books should take advantage of the Books by reading them in their respective Mosques especially during this Holy Month.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Alfred Lahai expressed appreciation on behalf of the Minister of Social Welfare to Mr. Gurcan for his good gesture to the Government and the Muslim Community in Sierra Leone and to the Mission in Turkey for the good work in bringing development home. The Permanent Secretary assured that the Qurans would be distributed evenly across the country in accordance with the Donor’s intended purpose.

In his brief contribution, Ibrahim M. Sow, Chairman and Co-founder of MIMS Brothers Trading Company, said, Mr. Suat Gurcan is a Turkish businessman who has embarked on some developmental activities in Sierra Leone. These developmental activities he said, included but not limited to the building of Mosques in two districts- Moyamba and Kabala, building of water wells in different parts of the country and the donation of cows during the celebration of Eid-ul-Ada.  

Receiving the 800 copies of the Quran, the Director General and Ambassador-at-Large. Florence Nyawa Bangalie on behalf of the Minister and Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, thanked Mr. Suat Gurcan for such a laudable gesture to the Government and People of Sierra Leone.

She commended Ambassador Kaisamba and team for their proactiveness and the love they have for the country, adding that, the Mission in Turkey is one of Sierra Leone’s Embassies abroad that is always supportive to the Ministry in all aspects.

The Director General and Ambassador-at-Large said Sierra Leone is a religious tolerant country and that the donation of copies of the Holy Quran was a blessing to both the donor and to the Government and people of Sierra Leone especially during the Holy month of Ramadan.

Ramadan, Mrs. Bangalie said is a blessed month in which the Holy Quran was revealed and that reading of the Quran during this month is pivotal, assuring the donor that the Qurans would be used for the intended purpose. She concluded that she is confident that the Holy Books would be distributed evenly to the various Mosques in the country.
