Meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Sierra Leone and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba, 12th March 2022

 

 

 

 

 

The meeting underscored the excellent and fruitful bilateral cooperation between Sierra Leone and Cuba. It also underpinned the cordial cooperation of the two countries at the multilateral fora.

The Deputy Minister expressed appreciation to Sierra Leone for its support over the years of the UNGA resolutions on Cuba regarding the economic embargo on Cuba.

In return, the Foreign Minister extended gratitude to the Government and people of Cuba for providing medical and technical assistance to Sierra Leone during the Ebola and the Covid-19 pandemics respectively.

The meeting emphasized the crucial need to further consolidate cooperation between the two countries.

The Foreign Minister of Sierra Leone dilated the need for his country to learn from Cuba’s experience regarding its transition to a developing country.

He informed the meeting about Sierra Leone’s candidature for election to the Non-Permanent category of the UNSC.

He also requested the granting of 50 scholarships annually for a period of five years.

In addition, the meeting considered the visit to Sierra Leone of high-level trade and investment delegation from Cuba, which is to focus on key developmental sectors.
